Awards are conferred in recognition of a company or organisation’s excellence in a certain field. Such recognition seeks to bring about a status to the organisation, thereby giving it a competitive advantage and making it an unrivalled player in the industry.

In honour of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives by Smart Reader® Worldwide, the organisation was recently awarded the Business Management Awards 2012 in the categories of CSR and Business Leadership. The awards were conferred by Global Business Corporation in Lima, Peru. Smart Reader® Worldwide was the only company representing Malaysia and South-east Asia to receive this outstanding honour.

Founders of Smart Reader® Worldwide, Dr Richard Ong, who is also Chief Executive Officer and Dr K H Wang, the Group Executive Director were present to receive the awards.

The Business Management Awards 2012 drew participation from companies in public, private and non-profit organisations. The companies were assessed by an Evaluation Team from Global Business Corporation, consisting of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals from different countries with extensive experience in the field of consulting and business advisory capacity.

The CSR Award takes into consideration the commitment of the company in contributing to sustainable economic development by working with employees, their families, the local community and society in order to improve the quality of life based on ethical values and the respect for employees, communities and the environment.

On the other hand, the Business Leadership Award takes into account the ability of the company to achieve what they want through its employees acting as a team to exceed targets.

The CSR award is highly significant in that the recognition was bestowed on Smart Reader® Worldwide in conjunction with a major on-going CSR project.

Launched in 2009, the CSR project initiated by Smart Reader® Worldwide is entitled the National One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme. When Dr Wang won RM11,000 in cash after winning the National Woman Entrepreneur Award 2009, she put the money to good use by initiating the One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme.

The One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme was established with the aim of providing quality preschool education to underprivileged and poor children throughout the country.

Thus far, Smart Reader® Worldwide is working hand in hand with the Yayasan Di Raja Sultan Mizan in Terengganu and the Yayasan Tuanku Syed Putra in Perlis to help identify needy children in the respective states.

The collaboration between the various Smart Reader Kids® throughout the nation and Smart Reader® Worldwide has created an impact as can be seen from the testimonies of parents from lower income families and guardians at children’s homes.

Smart Reader® Worldwide has, so far, helped about 300 children under the National One Child One Hope Scholarship Programme. This education programme is a first in CSR initiatives in Malaysia as scholarships are given out to needy and less fortunate preschool-going children as compared to the norm, which are tertiary education scholarships.

The programme aims to give children access to quality pre-school education so that children are able to obtain a solid educational base in the hope of a better and brighter future.

“Quality early childhood education also encourages the emotional, social, physical, creative and cognitive development of children. To the poor, education is wealth and underprivileged children should not be denied quality pre-school education just because they cannot afford it,” explained Dr Wang.

“Moreover, research has proven that children who are given quality preschool education undergo a spectrum of learning experiences which encourage interest in the learning process,” she added.

As has often been said by both the founders of Smart Reader Kids®, “A firm foundation in early years’ education will stand the children in good stead in any future undertakings and thereby ensure that these young learners grow up to be pillars of the nation and also world class citizens.”

Dr Wang believes that children should be nurtured to become world class citizens. This nurturing, she reiterates, must start in the foundational years of child’s development.

Both Dr Ong and Dr Wang feel that quality early childhood education should not be the private domain of the elite, but must be accessible to all children regardless of race, gender, background or socio-economic status.

Dr Ong and Dr Wang were instrumental in taking Smart Reader® Worldwide to the pinnacle of success. The formula for a successful early childhood curriculum spurred the establishment of more than 300 Smart Reader Kids® centres nationwide.

“This is the legacy we want to leave behind for future generations,” stated Dr Wang.
