At the event, the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail expressed his concern on the importance of providing a comprehensive early childhood education to children while they are still in their early years. He also urged early childhood education operators to emphasise on providing positive learning experiences.

The National One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme was established in line with Smart Reader® Worldwide’s and Association of Professional Early Childhood Providers (APECP) Malaysia’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to provide quality early childhood education to less fortunate children while they are still in their formative years.

Founded in December 2007, APECP provides a platform to share ideas, innovation and new research in Early Childhood Education. The Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Hajjah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil currently serves as its royal patron.

In Perlis, this is the sixth year that the scholarships are offered to less fortunate children. This year, this scholarship will enable 25 less fortunate children to pursue a high-quality pre-school education. These children will receive a full year’s study at Smart Reader Kids® Taman Sri Bahagia, Kangar, Perlis or Smart Reader Kids® Jalan Arau-Kodiang, Arau, Perlis.

Compared to the previous years, the scholarships are now extended to children taking the Smart Tadris® programme as well. Currently, there are more than 100 Smart Reader Kids Islamic™ centres nationwide offering the Smart Tadris® programme.

“Ever since we launched the Smart Tadris® programme, we have been receiving positive feedback from parents and educators alike. Riding on this successful endeavour, we are committed to take a step forward and expand to United Arab Emirates and other Muslim countries,” said Dato’ Sri Dr Richard Ong.

Since its inception in 2009, the National One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme has enabled more than 300 less fortunate children to experience quality early childhood education.

One of the recipients is six-year-old Inas Batrisyia. Having been in the Smart Reader Kids® programme for three years, her parents, Khairiah Che Mat and L. Amir Ahmad are very grateful that she has been given the opportunity to study at Smart Reader Kids® Taman Sri Bahagia, Kangar, Perlis.

“We believe the comprehensive curriculum offered at Smart Reader Kids® has helped our daughter to do well in her studies. She now has the courage to speak English with other people and has improved her self-confidence. Her teachers are also well-qualified. I hope this scholarship programme can continue for many years to come.” said Khairiah.

Another recipient is five-year-old Aqib Naqiuddin. His parents, Noorhaslizawati Kasim and Sharudin Nayan wanted him to have a good early childhood education.

According to them, before their son attended Smart Reader Kids® Taman Sri Bahagia, Kangar, Perlis, he did not have the interest to learn English. These days, however, he has cultivated the interest, and can read and speak English quite well.

“Although he has only been in the programme for 2 months, he has shown great improvement in his English. I am impressed with his progress and I feel proud whenever he speaks English to me,” said Noorhaslizawati.

Besides providing the opportunity for children to receive a quality early childhood education, the scholarship programme also helps families to ease their financial burden.

Parents of five-year-old Nur Awatif Bt Mohd Zahir, Hafiza Bt Mohd Hanifah and Mohd Zahir B Ismail said, “We currently have two children in primary school, and we are expecting another baby in another four months. With the scholarship, it has certainly helped to ease the burden of our family”.

For Malathy A/P Sathasivam, she revealed that she learned about the programme from her friends. As a single mother to five-year-old Shavarama A/L Saudaraja, she is thankful that the programme has enabled her son to have a better grasp of the English language and be exposed to a quality early childhood programme.

In order to extend the scholarships to even more children, The National One Child One Hope Education Scholarship Programme committee works closely with Yayasan Tuanku Syed Putra.
