Chinese New Year (or Lunar New Year) took place on February 10 this year. Known to be one of the most important festivals for the Chinese community in particular, not only does it represents the start of a new year, it is also notably referred to as a joyous occasion that symbolises family reunions because regardless where they are, family members will go at great lengths to make it home to celebrate with their loved ones.

A day to relive tradition as well as inculcate the true spirit of generousity, Smart Reader® Worldwide decided to begin the auspicious year of the snake with a good note by sharing the festive joy with the less fortunate as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to give back to the community.

Therefore on 19 February 2013, Smart Reader® Worldwide held its annual Chinese New Year Children’s Festive Party at Wisma Smart Reader® I, where approximately 180 orphans along with their caretakers from ten orphanages throughout Klang Valley namely; Shelter Home for Children, Sunbeams Home, Agathians Shelter, Bethesda Home, Yayasan Chow Kit, Persatuan Kebajikan Rumah Rita, Pusat Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Pure Life, Rumah Titian Kasih, Pusat Jagaan Rumah Chrestus and Pusat Jagaan Rumah Perlindungan Rahoma attended the joyous celebration. Similar to any other festive occasion, the children came wearing beautiful clothes and exchanged well wishes to one another. They age below 12 years old and consist of various races.

For an authentic taste of Chinese culture, the festive occasion began with a traditional lion and dragon dance followed by impressive wushu performances. The adorable children of Smart Reader Kids® (Taman Sri Sinar, Segambut) and Smart Reader Kids® (Batu 3, Jalan Ipoh) then performed the ‘1Malaysia’ dance and ‘Gong Xi Gong Xi’ song respectively. The festive spirit permeated the air as guests sang along to the familiar Chinese New Year tunes in perfect harmony.

Part of the event line-up also included a special appearance of a Smart Reader® Worldwide staff dressed as Choi San Ye, known to many as the God of Prosperity. Upon catching sight of him, the children cheered and clapped to their hearts’ delight. Many of the children were awestruck at his quirky rendition of the famous ‘Oppa Gangnam Style’ song and some joined in the fun by imitating his dance moves. At the end of his performance, the children gathered around him to receive little bags filled with sweets. They were then presented with another highlight of the day, which was the Chinese Yo-yo performance by the talented students of SJK© Kepong (2). The mascots of Smart Reader® Worldwide, Smart and Jack as well as Supertots also made their presence to interact with the children.

Undeniably, no Chinese New Year celebration is complete without the distribution of ang pows or red money packets. The ang pows were distributed to the children by Chief Executive Officer, Dr Richard Ong, Group Executive Director, Honourary Professor Dato’ Dr K H Wang and Corporate Manager, Mr Kevan Ong. The children also received goodie bags that consist of Smart Reader Kids® water tumblers, sponsored gifts from Pharmaniaga and Mandarin oranges – a symbol of abundance and good fortune. Judging from their smiles and laughter, it was evident that everyone was thrilled to receive their gifts.  At the end of the day, the children went home with their goodies and McDonald’s lunch boxes, beaming with happiness and satisfaction.

Smart Reader® Worldwide firmly believes in imparting the importance of cultural sensitivity, racial harmony, happiness and care among its students. This, according to Dr Richard Ong and Dato’ Dr K H Wang, will nurture them to be the leaders of tomorrow. In this respect, they expressed that Smart Reader® Worldwide is committed to organise more meaningful events and programmes that will bring joy, care and happiness to even more children.
